Antenatal courses

Would you like to prepare for your baby and for parenthood in a systematic way? Besides the antenatal check-ups, we also offer antenatal courses at the birthing centre. In addition, there is a list of books that we recommend below.

Our antenatal course

“(…) A well-informed woman who is capable of making a choice for herself and her child and is aware of her abilities is a healthier woman. She is more likely to deliver a healthy baby and experience fewer complications, she needs less social and medical support and she will cost the healthcare system less. But above all, this woman will have a more satisfying experience of pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period, and her child will have better prospects for an optimal start in life.”

The objective of our regular antenatal courses in Bäretswil is to provide you with holistic and professional support and prepare you for the birth and the first few weeks after it.

Thanks to our tried-and-tested mix of midwifery and medical expertise, physiotherapy/exercise, breathing techniques/meditation and baby care, you get a realistic idea of what to expect and can prepare accordingly. In addition to passing on knowledge and practising certain techniques, the courses also provide an opportunity for you to chat to other women and couples in a relaxed atmosphere.

At our antenatal courses for first-time parents, you will find out how to get in touch with your unborn child and how you can contribute towards a successful natural birth. You will learn breathing techniques and relaxation exercises for pain relief (more information on the topic of pain is provided on the pages “Advantages of natural birth” and “One-to-one midwife care”).

At our three-hour antenatal class for women have given birth before and their partners, couples will have time to prepare for the birth again and get ready for family life with more than one child. The courses are run by midwives from the birthing centre and the maximum number of couples per course is six. The midwife will take personal wishes into account, thereby ensuring optimal preparation for the upcoming change in the family situation.

On request, we also offer individual antenatal courses and HypnoBirthing™ courses both for the mother on her own and for couples.

Literature

We recommend the following authors and books:

  • Fréderic Leboyer: Birth Without Violence
  • Ina May Gaskin: Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth
  • Ingeborg Stadelmann: Consultation with a Midwife
  • Marie F. Mongan: HypnoBirthing: A Natural Approach to a Safe, Easier, More Comfortable Birthing
  • Michel Odent, e.g. Birth and Breastfeeding
  • Sheila Kitzinger: Pregnancy & Childbirth

Incidentally, there are a lot of good things that you can do for yourself and your baby that don’t involve reading books. First and foremost, look after yourself! Pay attention to the signals from your body and try to live a healthy lifestyle (healthy nutrition, sufficient sleep, exercise and fresh air). Talk and sing songs to your unborn child and tell the baby about all the people who are looking forward to his or her birth. Confidence and minimal stress are a blessing for every pregnancy.
